Jon and Lanvi met back in the summer of 2010 at their annual youth camp. They’re part of a Catholic youth group called Thieu Nhi Thanh The (TNTT) and every year TNTT hosts an annual camp that combines all 14 church groups in Orange County. They both attended different churches, but since both of their churches were small, they were teamed up together temporarily during a soccer competition. That was the first time they ever spoke to each other. After camp, they were able to connect with each other through Facebook. They didn’t think too much about it besides just making a new friend.
Since that day, Jon and Lanvi talked every day and every night, but just chatting soon became chatting over Xbox. They quickly discovered that they had one major common interest and that was video gaming. Since their parents were strict with them about hanging out, they found that hanging out on Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 was more than enough.
On the night of the 4th of July, they spent the night watching the fireworks with their families from two different places, but they stayed on the phone together and pretended they were watching it together. Both of them by this time had a mutual crush on each other, but they were both afraid and unsure. They’ve only known each other for a few weeks, but felt as if they had known each other since forever. After many hints towards each other, Jon finally asked Lanvi out and she said yes.
Their friends always joked with them about when they would get married. Things got much more serious when Lanvi’s dad gave Jon his blessing before passing away. All the planning had already started in 2017. Lanvi’s only requirement for proposing was for Jon to land a full time job and have financial stability. Around this time Lanvi was helping a friend of hers, Jason, find a ring for his fiance, so Jon secretly asked Jason to get Lanvi’s ring size. In 2018, Jon finally landed his first full-time job, which meant the proposal plan was now in motion. For many weeks he searched for the perfect diamond and the perfect ring. One day, he accidentally sent the properties of the diamond to a group chat with Lanvi in it, but luckily, she didn’t open it. Jon asked Lanvi’s mom for her blessing in late May 2018. Her mom was so excited that she accidentally told Lanvi the next day. Her maid of honor, Vanessa, quickly covered it up and told Jon that he may have to change things up. Time was ticking, so Jon had to push up his plans. He spent many weeks and late nights of coordinating and preparation. During all this time, Lanvi thought Jon was busy with work. Her anxiety grew as July got closer.
It was not unusual to have dinner with their friends, so Jon planned just another casual “dinner with friends” on June 30th. That Saturday morning, Jon made an excuse to have Jenny drive Lanvi to dinner and that he would just meet them there since he had class all day and “homework due that night”. Getting closer to dinner, Jenny took Lanvi to go visit her dad at the cemetery. This is where the proposal began. After visiting her dad, during the drive, Lanvi was told to visit a website built by Jon that took her down memory lane. When she finally arrived at Vista Ridge Park, she was greeted by each of their close friends, each holding a picture frame. There were 7 frames to signify the 7 years of their relationship. Each frame had a photo of a very special moment in their relationship and a letter handwritten by Jon. Jon held the 8th frame, an empty frame, because he was hoping that it would be a frame of this very moment. Finally, Jon got down on one knee and obviously, Lanvi said yes.
